【RK3588/Sophon/Nvidia Smart Boxes】Tackling 'No Power, No Network' AI Algorithm Deployment to Ensure Safety at Daya Bay Quanmei Petrochemical Terminal Construction Site

“Above the vast expanse of blue waves, a thousand-meter steel trestle bridge winds its way into the sea like a dragon emerging from water. Project builders on the steel trestle are working diligently, striving to accelerate Huizhou Daya Bay's development into a world-class green petrochemical base.” This is how Beijing Daily recently described the Quanmei Petrochemical Terminal construction site in Quanwan Port Area, Huizhou Port, Daya Bay.

Quanmei Petrochemical is a wholly-owned subsidiary of ExxonMobil, the world's largest oil and gas producer. Reportedly, this terminal project will serve the high-volume inbound and outbound demands for bulk commodities and raw materials such as petroleum products and chemicals in the Daya Bay Petrochemical Zone.

With a large workforce, tight deadlines, and heavy tasks, how can the engineering construction be completed safely, with high quality, and efficiently?

"'Anyone entering the construction site must wear the complete and standardized 'seven-piece safety kit'!' " said the safety manager of the Quanmei Petrochemical Terminal project. In addition to standard safety helmets, safety shoes, reflective vests, and life jackets, there are also enhanced protective eyewear, arm sleeves, and gloves.

How to ensure that personnel entering the construction site comply with wearing regulations? Behind this, Quanmei Petrochemical partnered to create the 'Quanmei Video Analysis System', responsible for establishing construction site monitoring and developing a series of algorithms to perform real-time identification and alarming for personnel attire and dangerous behaviors on the terminal construction site, providing support for safety management.

The smart safety monitoring algorithm series for the terminal construction site includes: short-sleeve/short-pants detection, safety helmet detection, safety goggle detection, smoking detection, safety harness detection, life jacket detection, etc. These are deployed at the entrance of the Quanmei Petrochemical Terminal construction site and at multiple cameras within the site.

In addition, a mini-program was customized for Quanmei Petrochemical, allowing multi-role managers to remotely control cameras on their mobile phones, view front-end surveillance videos in real-time, playback recordings, receive alert event pushes, and analyze alert data. This forms an algorithm-driven alert closed-loop system: 'Front-end Hardware + Polaris Algorithm Platform + Mobile Mini-Program'.

For large construction projects like Quanmei Petrochemical, with a project construction period of approximately two years, the cost of newly deploying multi-point fiber optics and electrical wiring across several kilometers for algorithm deployment would be extremely high.

Facing an environment without power or network, after on-site investigation, an attempt was made to power cameras using 'solar panels + lithium batteries', and to provide computing power through flexible networking using 'wireless 4G dongles + cameras'. After video streams are aggregated to an integrated video management device, the Polaris platform then performs visual algorithm analysis, ultimately meeting the client's requirements at a lower cost.

Naturally, this solution is also suitable for projects located in remote, harsh environments with large spans, enabling algorithm deployment and application even in 'no power, no network' conditions.

The safety supervision video analysis system developed for the Quanmei Petrochemical Terminal construction site, with its highly versatile algorithms and platform, has already been implemented in projects such as Vopak Terminals Smart Construction Site, constantly safeguarding the safety of construction sites and personnel, truly demonstrating the value of AI empowering countless scenarios.
