Customer Requirements

Unlike typical scenarios where only one label on a parcel needs to be verified, this customer wanted to apply a new label to display the parcel’s actual weight, on top of an existing label already affixed to the parcel surface. However, achieving this requirement presented four major challenges:

  1. The new label must not cover the original shipping label’s barcode.
  2. The labeling process must be fast and precise to ensure overall operational efficiency is unaffected.
  3. The solution must support parcels of all sizes and shapes, ensuring labeling and inspection for all applicable items.
  4. The system should be compact and lightweight, enabling deployment even in space-constrained environments.

Cognex 3D-A1000 Solution

To address these requirements, Cognex developed a customized vision solution for intelligent parcel labeling and label verification in the express logistics industry based on the 3D-A1000. Two 3D-A1000 cameras are mounted on separate robotic arms—one responsible for parcel pickup, the other for intelligent label placement—with the two devices networked and working collaboratively to complete the entire operation.

Locate the Original Label

First, the 3D-A1000 uses its 2D pattern finding tool to locate the position of the existing label and guides the robotic arm to pick up the parcel. Equipped with proven Cognex embedded vision tools, the 3D-A1000 easily handles a wide variety of parcels—including small, transparent, or reflective-surface items—and delivers stable detection across diverse parcel sizes and shapes.

Re-determine Optimal Label Placement

Next, using the 3D-A1000’s 3D surface location tool, the system identifies all feasible 3D coordinates on the parcel surface. Through simple programming, it guides the robotic arm to select the shortest possible movement path to apply the new label—while avoiding the original label—thereby improving labeling efficiency.

This project fully demonstrates the 3D-A1000’s exceptional capability in combining 2D and 3D technologies. With minimal script writing, it delivers an efficient and highly accurate solution for intelligent parcel labeling and label verification. The compact 3D-A1000 smart camera, with its unique robotic arm deployment method, can be easily installed even in confined spaces. Pre-focused and pre-calibrated before shipment, system integration is as simple as installation.
